Session 1Foundations of Legal Research
BSIL Certificate Course · October 2026
From a first idea to a manuscript ready for journal submission, in two intensive days with judges, academics and practitioners.
About the course
This course introduces law students and young professionals to the full process of academic legal research and publication: from developing an initial idea and researching it efficiently, to drafting a manuscript for journal submission.
It combines foundational research skills with practical training in literature review, research questions, evidence, doctrinal and socio-legal methods, research ethics, academic integrity, the responsible use of AI, and the publication process. Particular emphasis is placed on critical thinking, methodological choice, source evaluation, argument development and scholarly contribution.
You will also get structured guidance on turning research into a publishable article: selecting suitable journals, understanding indexing and publication standards, preparing submissions, navigating peer review and responding to reviewer comments. Through practical exercises, each participant progressively develops their own research project and publication roadmap.
