In a secret ballot conducted in line with Rule 30 of the UNGA Rules of Procedure, Bangladesh secured 99 votes against 91 votes for the Republic of Cyprus’s candidate, Ambassador Andreas S. Kakouris. In accordance with the UN's established regional rotation system, the presidency for the upcoming session was designated to the Asia-Pacific Group. The 81st session is scheduled to formally open on 8 September 2026, with the high-level General Debate commencing on 22 September 2026.
This victory marks a historic milestone for Bangladesh, as the country reclaims the prestigious seat after exactly four decades. Bangladesh last held the UNGA presidency during the 41st session in 1986-87, under the leadership of then-Foreign Minister Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury. Holding this influential organ's presidency grants the nation a powerful multilateral platform to shape global discourse on sustainable development, international security, and climate justice. Furthermore, with Foreign Minister Rahman's extensive career specializing in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Bangladesh's leadership arrives at a critical juncture to advocate effectively for the strategic interests and equitable economic transitions of the Global South.
