Rohingya Genocide Case

The International Court of Justice has commenced substantive hearings in The Gambia v. Myanmar, addressing allegations of breaches of the 1948 Genocide Convention concerning the Rohingya population. This marks the merits phase of the case.

The case stems from Myanmar’s 2017 military operations in Rakhine State, which forced over 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh amid killings, sexual violence, and village burnings. The Gambia instituted proceedings in 2019, invoking collective responsibility under the Genocide Convention.

The hearing underscores the role of international law as a mechanism for preventing mass atrocities, enforcing humanitarian norms, and ensuring that grave crimes against protected groups do not remain without consequence. The Bangladesh Society of International Law reiterates its concern for accountability, justice, and the protracted suffering of Rohingya refugees hosted by Bangladesh.
